He first coached the Men’s team that were entered in the National League second division. After gaining promotion that season, the team flourished under Martin’s guidance and leadership in the Club’s early years. He helped develop many players such as George Charters, Grant Forrest, Cammy King, Rab Hartley and many many more that came through the Club during his time and went on to have successful playing careers. For the next thirteen years, Martin coached at the Club until his illness was diagnosed in January 2001 and such was the affection for him that many of the players kept in touch over this period and until his death in March 2002. A huge figure in our Club’s early history and sadly missed by so many today.
